Take Shelter (2011)Directed by: Jeff Nichols Written by: Jeff NicholsStarring: Michael Shannon, Jessica Chastain, Shea Wigham, Katy Mixon, Tova Stewart
My thoughts throughout the film basically just this: “Michael Shannon you are an acting god, Michael Shannon you are an acting god, Jessica Chastain you are an acting goddess, Michael Shannon - all the awards.
Seriously, along with Martha Marcy, Drive, Retreat, Another Earth, and Red State, this is one of my favorite films from this year (and honestly, from the past few years). It’s a quiet film throughout, but in a way that leaves you unsure, and completely tense during every scene. All you need to know is that this a film very much about family, support, and one man who tries to keep those two elements in his life whilst also trying to prepare for what he sees as an oncoming fatal storm, while part of him fears he’s schizophrenic. This film really packs its punch in the last act…where I quite literally was biting my nails, tying my hair up, no - letting it down, and going through all my nervous ticks. It’s that last half hour that makes this film absolutely incredible.
And that last scene, like Martha Marcy May Marlene - well, watch out, it’s a doozy, folks.
My rating: 4.5/5

I kind of regret not watching this movie while it was still in theaters. I think the day I wanted to watch it, I ended up watching Ides of March instead :(
